CP2000 Notice: What to Do If the IRS Says You Underreported Income

You open the envelope and the IRS says you owe more. Your stomach drops. Breathe. A CP2000 isn’t a bill, and it isn’t an audit. It’s the IRS telling you the income on your return doesn’t match what someone else reported about you, and it wants an answer.

What Is a CP2000 Notice?

Employers, banks and payment platforms send your income straight to the IRS. Its system compares those records to your return. When they don’t line up, you get a CP2000 with proposed changes to your tax return. The IRS says the difference may raise your tax, lower it, or change nothing. The notice isn’t a bill, but your reply may be required.

And a missing 1099 won’t save you. Payers file their copy with the IRS, even if yours got lost.

Why Does the IRS Say My Income Doesn’t Match?

It isn’t always your mistake. Common causes:

  • A W-2, 1099-NEC or 1099-K you forgot about

  • Interest or dividends from an account you overlooked

  • A payer’s error, like a wrong amount on a form

  • Identity theft, with someone using your Social Security number

What to Do First

  1. Read the whole notice. Find your response date. Most give about 30 days, but the date printed on your notice is the one that counts.

  2. Check your records. Compare it with your W-2s, 1099s and bank statements. You can get your tax transcript from the IRS.

  3. Pick a side. Agree, partly agree or disagree. Sign the response form and attach proof for anything you dispute.

  4. Reply on time. Upload, fax or mail it. Need more time? Send that request with your reply.

Should I File an Amended Return?

Only if the notice is right and you have other income, credits or expenses to report. Then complete Form 1040-X, write “CP2000” at the top, and send it with your response. Don’t mail it separately. If you simply agree and have nothing to add, you don’t need to amend.

Chasing a refund on an older year? Amended returns generally must be filed within three years of the original filing date, or two years of payment, whichever is later.

What If You Agree but Can’t Pay?

Ignoring it is the worst move. Without a reply, the IRS may send another notice and a bill. Interest keeps growing until you pay, and penalties may apply. If you can’t pay in full, you can ask for a payment plan or an offer in compromise. Here’s how to set up an IRS payment plan in Texas.
